EBDS Engineering is present on the BO detection market for quite a number of years. Thanks to its great experience in this field, especially with its « Martine » system, well appreciated by its users, EBDS Engineering is now proposing a brand new developed BO detection system called “Emerald”. Even though it has kept the “good points” of the old Martine program, it is totally different and suppresses all the downsides of its older sister. It is much more performing, integrates a lot more of detection calculations, uses a brand new user web interface, and incorporates a lot of important new features.

Calculation features
The calculations, unlike classical system, are based on the possible combined metallurgical behaviors of the curves. They have had notably the following characteristics:
- Self-adaptation to the casting conditions without any necessary intervention of an operator thanks to its individual Self Adaptation Thresholds Parameters. No steel grade to introduce.
- Quantification the importance of the phenomena's to increase the reliability and the speed of detection, in combination with the use of a Critical Events Matrix
- Absolute Temperature Correction Algorithms, for thermal sensibility compensation.
- Easy integration of calculation algorithms for detection of other patterns.(ex: mold flux “rupture” in ferritic stainless).
- New algorithms can be incorporated easily if necessary.
- The calculations are releasing 3 possible levels of alarm to the operator, via speakers and on the screen.

Image and user interface features
For each of the strands, a computer (INTEL Nuc type) is installed in the control room of the caster, with a 16:9 Full HD 1080P screen.
- This computer communicates with the database server installed in electric sub-station, via network (client/server).
- This computer displays real-time image of the thermal exchanges in the mould that is moving similarly to the slab into the mould.
- Its width is of course continuously related to the casting format. It is so a real “wide window into the mould”.
- It also displays operational information, such as the casting speed, the mould level position, etc... And the operator uses this screen to interact with the BO detection system (temperature visualization, setting in/out of service of TC, visualization of previous alarms,...)
- The system has a trend zone for temperature display, and so much more features...
- The interface is done via Web Browser (Http, PHP,...)
It also displays operational informations, as the casting speed, the mould level position, etc... The system shows automatically the pair of TC curves that are in alarm. And so much more features...
Computer system/hardware
The EMERALD system runs under Windows Server 2012, on redundant computers (1 pair per strand).
The MySQL database runs in real-time on each server, and collects the data via an Applicom industrial network communication card.
The database stores permanently not only the data's, but also all calculation results, so that is allowed to come back, while on-line, on any event that happened, without interrupting the detection process.
A console is available in the computer cabinet to operate all computers when necessary.

Data acquisition system
Even though it is possible to install a classical acquisition system (S7 ET-200 for example), EBDS Engineering has developed its own data acquisition system in order to maximize reliability and reduce maintenance costs of the hardware on the mould to the maximum.
The digitalization is done on the mould, with the help of an dedicated electronic data acquisition card
It allows to suppress the heavy compensation cables, and their plugs, by a twisted pair cable.
The long range transmission to the electrical substation is done by Profibus.
There is a SIEMENS S7-300 for each strand, for data concentration and
preparation, and to make them “available” on the industrial network.

EBDS Engineering has been awarded by APERAM Chatelet (Belgium) to progressively equip its copper plates with FBG fibers. The target is to switch from thermocouples to FBG fibers for all the moulds.
MARCH 2018
Isdemir (Turkey) has awarded EBDS Engineering to upgrade its present Martine breakout detection program, with the latest Emerald BPS program.
EBDS Engineering has placed a patent demand in relation with the use of FBG fibers, installed in a "crossing direction" of the casting axis, in moulds of continuous casting machines.
FEBRUARY 2018
EBDS Engineering and APERAM Chatelet have commissioned a broadface copper plate equiped with 4 optical FBG fibers (70 temperature measuring points each), perpendicular to the casting axis. The first results will be published at the ICS 2018 conferences in Venice (7th international congress on science and technology of steelmaking). In October, ArcelorMittal Tubarão (Brazil) presented a technical paper at the 48th Conferences on steel making and casting in Sao Paulo (ABM Week 2017). This paper explains the conversion results to our Emerald BO Detection and Thermal Monitoring System.
On caster #3, as mentioned p.7, the average alarms (true and false) during the last 13 months are 6 per strand and per month (including true sticker detection). And no sticker BO during this period while the caster was monitored by Emerald. This caster produces +/- 2.300.000 tons per year.

EBDS Engineering has commissioned its Emerald BO detection program on the 3 slab casters of AM Tubarão (6 strands).
NOVEMBER 2016
The new Emerald BO detection system ordered by TOSCELIK Osmaniye has been successfully commissioned in 2 days, and has already shown its performances during the first day of commissioning, detecting several nice sticking patterns.
The re-positioning of the thermocouples, as well as their deepness of installation, have immediately shown state-of-the-art measurements.
The older BaoSight system is not in use any more.
SEPTEMBER 2016
EBDS Engineering has been awarded by TOSCELIK Osmaniye (Turkey) to replace the existing BO detection system (BAO-Sight, from BAO Steel), with the new Emerald BO detection System for its 2 strand slab caster. The supply comprises a new Siemens temperature acquisition system.
EBDS Engineering has been awarded by ARCELORMITTAL Tubarão (Brazil) to replace the existing BO detection systems (CC#1 & CC#2 : BPS DEMAG ; CC#3: Japonese system), with the new Emerald BO detection System for all the 3 slab casters (2-strands each).
MAY 2016
EBDS Engineering has been awarded for a 6 month trial at AM Tubarão (Brazil), on caster #3. The trial has started on 15th of May.
AM Tubarão has already stopped their old BO detection system on one strand of Caster#3, and Emerald runs instead. On the other strand, Emerald runs in parallel with their older system.
APRIL 2016
ISDEMIR (Turkey) wished to test the new EMERALD program, in the perpective of an upgrade of the older "Martine" program currently running on the 2 casters.
A server has been installed in parallel on 1 strand of caster #2, so that Isdemir can appreciate the improvements brought by the new program.

EBDS Engineering has installed and commissioned the new Emerald BO detection program, in remplacement of the older "Martine" program, at APERAM Châtelet (ArcelorMitttal).
The new program runs on 2 new T320 DELL redundant servers, and works perfectly.
